OUTLINE Second Pass

I. Introduction

Syd Mead was born in St. Paul Minnesota on July 18, 1933. Mead graduated from high school in Colorado in 1951, and after serving in the United States army for three years he went to school at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Mead is a concept artist that has worked on several projects from 1959 to the present. Over the the years, Mead’s work as served as the visual backbone for the visual effects artist on several ground braking films such as Tron (1980), Blade Runner (1980) and Aliens (1985). As all of these films continually broke the barrier of visual effects and Syd Meads Concepts and paintings have served as the visual basis for these movies and others. All of which, continually elevated the level of visual effects in feature films.

Thesis:
As all of these films continually broke the barrier of visual effects and Syd Meads Concepts and paintings have served as the visual basis for these movies and others. All of which, continually elevated the level of visual effects in feature films.

Sub arguments:
Shape of Content:
Present work done by Syd Mead on a film and talk about how that film elevated visual effects Ex: Tron Syd’s preproduction work, and how it formed a bases for the extensive uses of CGI and computers.
II. Body

Syd Mead and Tron

1. Tron as one of the first films to uses mostly CGI and integrate traditional w/ computers Syd mead’s concepts as basis.
2. Vehicle designs, characters the way they transferred these ideas to the screen through printing in all black on film, scanning and rotoscoping
3. End argument with summary stament tie into Syd Meads work on blade runner. Ex: Syd’s work on Tron lent to the success of the visual effects on that project much like on Blade Runner.

Syd Mead and Blade Runner

1. Make an analysis of how the lack of computer generate visual effects allowed for more of the concept design to effect the feature film and the effects that were possible connect to Tron with similar idea of Syd’s work on Tron and its connection to the visual effects on that project.
2. 1983 Academy Awards Nominated Best Effects, Visual Effects Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich, David Dryer Nominated Saturn Award Best Science Fiction Film Blade Runner Nominated Best Director Ridley Scott Nominated Best Special Effects Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich
3. End argument Flow argument into Syd’s work on aliens and the visual effects of that film.

Syd Mead and Aliens

1. Relate the idea of vehicle interior design and character design presented in Blade runner and Tron and relate it to similar work done by Syd on Aliens.
2. Ex: Two stages for the filming of the colony in aliens constructing the colony on LV-426, using miniature models which were on average six feet tall and three feet wide. Tie into Syd’s concepts of the colony interior and exterior.
3. Sum up ideas tie back into Tron and Blade Runner .

III. Conclusion

Concept work for any feature film or video game has always served as the base for the visual effects presented in these projects. While the technology that existed in the 1980’s made it hard to reach the same level and feel of realism seen in concept work like that of Syd Mead’s, work however, because of the want to push the realism of visual effects in movies and Mead’s work as inspiration, the level of visual effects present in films rose and continues to rise today.

1. Closing statement of all that Syd’s work lead into on all three projects.
2. Talk about the link between concept works as a basis for visual effects.
